The Holy Cross emblem is taken from an ancient gravestone now resting in the Lady Chapel and believed to have been the marker for Bishop William Bradbridge, Rector of Newton Ferrers in the 16th. Century.
The presence of a church in Newton Ferrers has been recorded since AD 1084 – making it one of the oldest foundations in the County of Devon. A few fragments remain of a Norman church on this site but the present building dates from the 12th. – 14th. Centuries.
